Albert Schweitzer

1. Albert Schweitzer went to French Equatorial Africa, leaving his parents behind in
France. With great difficulty, he established a hospital there. Treating the local people
without knowing their language was the greatest problem. After finishing the first
day’s tedious work, he wrote his diary. What would have he written?
2. Imagine you are appointed as an assistant to Albert Schweitzer in the Lambarene
Mission Station, Africa. Would you like to join him? Express your likes and dislikes
with reasons using expressions like: I would like…, I dislike…, I prefer…. (Two
sentences) Eg. I’d like to work with him because I like serving suffering humanity.
3. Imagine that you are the Staff reporter of a newspaper. You visit French African
Cargo where Albert Schweitzer builds up his hospital. You want to prepare a
newspaper report about his works Write the report in about 100 words.
4. You got all the details through an interview. Write eight interview questions and its
answers
5. One day Albert Schweitzer happened to pick up a missionary magazine, which
contained an article telling the need of the medical worker in the Belgian Congo and
French Equatorial Africa. Write the first paragraph of the article
6. Albert Schweitzer gives an advertisement for the post of interpreter in a newspaper.
Prepare the advertisement for him. Hints: {punctual-honest-sincere-fluent in French
and African slang-service minded}
7. Every morning Joseph read out some instructions to the patients who gathered in front
of Albert Schweitzer's surgery. One day he thought of exhibiting a notice in front of the
surgery including all the instructions. Prepare the notice for Joseph.
8. Albert Schweitzer visited your school. There he delivered a speech about the immense
satisfaction he got for the work he had done in Lamberene. Prepare the speech. (Hints:
Received better opportunities than most-decided to devote the rest of life to relieve the
sufferings of others-serve humanity-services to natives of Africa-details of difficultiestiring
–hot weather-rewarded by obvious joy shown by the patients-filling a great
need.)
9. You went to meet Albert Schweitzer in the forests of Africa. When you reached the
hospital he was playing the Piano. You were very much attracted to the way he played
it. Write a dialogue between yourself and Schweitzer in which you convey your
admiration for him. At least eight exchanges.
10. Albert Schweitzer wrote a letter to his friend in Europe describing his hardships he
had to face in the service of the native Africans. Now help him draft the letter.
11. Albert Schweitzer got permission to build a hospital at Lamberene in French
Equatorial Africa. Then he meets a friend and discusses his plans with him. This friend
gives him some instructions about what all he should take with him to start the
hospital. Write four instructions given by the friend of Schweitzer.
